About End Grain

End grain flooring is gaining popularity among top architects and designers worldwide for its distinctive yet timeless appearance and exceptional durability. Ideal for high-traffic areas such as restaurants, hotels, and other commercial spaces, end grain flooring combines elegance with resilience. Like all wood floors, it can be stained to complement any design style, offering versatility in addition to strength.

This flooring is also an eco-friendly option. It utilizes smaller-diameter timber, often turning lower-grade wood—otherwise left in the forest—into a high-value, sustainable product.

Old Wood is proud to be one of the nation’s largest manufacturers of end grain flooring. Our collection features a wide variety of species, shapes, and sizes. Through years of experience, we’ve discovered that while some woods excel in plank flooring, not all are suited for end grain applications. If you have a unique idea or don't see the species you're looking for, let us know—your concept might inspire the next big trend.

Discover the unmatched durability, sustainability, and design potential of end grain flooring with Old Wood.

Douglas Fir

Douglas fir is one of our best selling end grains because of its durability and identifiable color. Similar to Pine in many respects, it dries a dark umber color. It is considered more ‘weatherly’ and is overall tougher when aged. Douglas Fir is a fantastic VE option over mesquite and oak. Douglas Fir is a beautiful, durable alternative that accepts a much wider range of stains, and would allow you to choose a stain in almost any color. The raw materials come from the line of the fire that very recently devastated the state of New Mexico, the Hermit's Peak/Calf Canyon fire, and has a high ESG (environmental, social, and governance) aspect to it.

Ponderosa Pine

Our Ponderosa Pine is responsibly sourced from fire reclamation efforts and sustainable forestry projects across the American West. Grown high in the Rocky Mountains, this classic wood boasts a tight ring structure from its slow-growing nature, making it both durable and richly textured.

Ponderosa Pine often features natural blue staining, which many find visually appealing. Stains create unique effects around knots and can beautifully interact with the blue tones. For designs where natural bluing isn’t desired, darker or brown stains easily blend it seamlessly with the surrounding wood. Tested at Los Alamos Labs, Ponderosa Pine demonstrates impressive performance compared to other pine species (see technical data). It's an excellent choice for residential and light commercial applications.

We offer Ponderosa Pine end grain blocks in 4"x4" and 4"x6" sizes, with a standard thickness of 0.5". Custom sizes and thicknesses are available upon request.

Mesquite

Mesquite is one of our best-selling woods, prized for its exceptional durability, tight grain, and rich red tones. The Prosopis glandulosa species, along with related varieties, is a high-desert shrub known for its incredible hardness—boasting a Janka rating of 2345, making it 80% harder than red oak.

What truly sets mesquite apart as a flooring material is its remarkable stability. Unlike many other woods, mesquite experiences minimal expansion and contraction, making it ideal for both residential and commercial applications. Though not particularly rare, mesquite trees are sparse and challenging to harvest. Globally, the wood has served diverse purposes such as food production, arid land stabilization, and fuel. Initiatives like USAID have supported mesquite planting in countries such as Ethiopia, where it benefits local communities.

At Old Wood, we honor the value of large, old trees and advocate for the responsible use of smaller or medium-sized trees. We maintain strict forestry and land management standards to ensure sustainability.

We offer mesquite blocks in a variety of sizes, including 4×4, 3×4, 3×3, 2×4, 2×3, and 2×2 inches. Larger blocks, though more expensive and less readily available, can be mixed with smaller sizes in random patterns to achieve stunning results while keeping costs manageable. Hexagon patterns are also available in 3.5-inch dimensions. All mesquite flooring is typically sold at ½-inch thickness, with custom sizes available upon request.

Make mesquite the foundation of your next project—durable, timeless, and responsibly sourced.
