Sustainability

Our forestry mission statement:

At Old Wood, we are committed to the sustainability, improvement, and responsible utilization of forests, both domestically and globally. Our vision focuses on empowering local communities through well-equipped, scientifically trained, and ecologically sound micro-forest industries. By creating global markets for thoughtfully planned forestry products, we aim to help these communities profit from their landscapes in sustainable ways—eliminating the need for destructive practices to survive.

Our philosophy emphasizes finding the highest and best uses for the most available species, producing wood products that are both functional and visually appealing to meet the expectations of our sophisticated clientele.

We source our wood responsibly:

  • Ponderosa Pine, Douglas Fir, White Fir, and other species come from regional forest management efforts and fire-reclaimed materials.

  • Mesquite is sustainably harvested from well-managed projects in Texas.

  • Piñon, Juniper, and Salt Cedar are often sourced in collaboration with the Alamo Navajo Tribe.

  • Internationally, we engage in projects in Hermosillo, Mexico, and other locations for mesquite, oak, and other unique, sustainably harvested woods.

We’re always seeking like-minded partners and collaborators who share our vision for ethical forestry practices that benefit both the environment and the greater good. At Old Wood, we believe sustainability isn’t just a goal—it’s a responsibility.

Old Wood is a Deeply

Green Company

Switching to a water-based polymer instead of petro-based alternatives might seem greener—but true sustainability runs deeper. At Old Wood, our mission goes beyond materials. We strive to empower communities living in harmony with their natural landscapes, equipping them with the tools and knowledge to manage those ecosystems sustainably. By sharing profits from well-crafted, globally marketed products, we help these communities thrive—offering alternatives to harmful practices and enabling them to provide for their families.

This ethos reflects principles like the Triple Bottom Line, Fair Trade, and Natural Capitalism. For us, being "Green" means fostering a global supply chain that supports carbon sequestration, social progress, and sustainable economics. Transparency and trust are at the heart of what we do—our operations and finances are an open book for those with a stake in our mission.

The demand for hardwood flooring is massive, driven by the natural desire for beauty and quality in homes. But we ask: What if flooring could deliver not just aesthetic appeal, but also contribute to environmental health and social good? Leading-edge design, scientifically sound coatings, and ethical sourcing are integral to our approach.

Contrast this with the rise of engineered flooring. While it may seem like a "green" option, its production often involves excessive glue, electricity, and diesel, paired with a hefty carbon footprint. Engineered flooring factories operate on a massive scale, with veneer-grade logs—the finest and most valuable trees—being overharvested. Shipping these logs across the globe for processing adds another layer of environmental cost, driven by economics, not sustainability.

At Old Wood, we take a different path. Our model prioritizes the highest and best use of lower-grade logs, avoiding the unnecessary harvesting of large, ancient trees. We actively preserve old-growth forests, declining logs from suppliers who seek to exploit their most magnificent specimens. Sustainability means walking the walk, not just talking the talk.

When you choose Old Wood, you're supporting a model of flooring that balances beauty with responsibility. Let us craft exceptional floors that contribute to a greener, more ethical future—because sustainability is not just a feature, it’s our foundation.
